Packing my hospital bag felt completely different the second time around. As a new mom, I brought way too much—half the items never left my bag. But now, as a second-time mom (who lives in a city condo and cannot overpack if I tried), I focused only on the things that truly made a difference the first time.
Whether you’re prepping for your first or fifth delivery, here’s exactly what’s going into my hospital bag this time around—simple, realistic, and mom-approved.
1. The Hulken Bag (My Game-Changer)
First things first: I’m packing everything in my Hulken bag.
It’s lightweight, wheels easily, and fits way more than it looks like it should. City moms: this thing is a lifesaver. It rolls effortlessly through hallways and elevators, and it collapses flat for storage.
2. Nursing Bra
A soft, stretchy nursing bra is non-negotiable. The hospital gown isn’t exactly breastfeeding-friendly, so having a comfortable bra makes those early feeds much easier.
3. Cozy Pajamas
Within hours of delivery, I always want out of the gown. I bring dark, loose, nursing-friendly pajamas that make me feel more like myself. I packed two pairs-one for each day.
4. Pillow From Home
Hospital pillows are…not it. Bringing one from home makes resting (and nursing) a million times more comfortable.
5. Towels
Hospitals provide towels, but they’re small and scratchy. I always bring one for both me and my husbands. It’s the first tip I tell first-time moms.
6. Cozy Blanket
Hospitals run cold. A soft blanket from home helps me relax and gives a sense of comfort during overnight stays.
7. Going-Home Outfit
Both baby and I get simple, soft going-home outfits.
For me:
- Wide-leg pants
- A nursing tank
- Oversized denim shirt
- Something that looks semi-put-together but feels like pajamas
For baby:
- Special going home outfit (I bought ours a boutique in Charleston it’s gender neutral. We have never found out the gender before delivery and I plan to bring home all my children in the same outfit!)
- Hat
- Optional blanket depending on weather
8. Flip Flops
One pair for:
- Showering
- Walking around the room
- Quick bathroom trips
Flip flops are easy, clean, and way more practical than slippers for the hospital floor.
9. Snacks
Postpartum hunger is real and immediate. I pack snacks for both me and my husband. I do also indulge in the all of the Italian Ices in the snack room on the maternity floor!
- Granola bars
- Trail mix
- Fruit snacks
- Protein bars
- Something salty (chips or pretzels)
10. Electrolytes
These are a must this time around. Labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery can leave you wiped. I love the Ultima Electrolytes, they are a must have for breastfeeding mamas!
11. Toiletries
My little “recovery shower” after birth is always one of my favorite moments. I keep it simple:
- Shampoo + conditioner
- Body wash
- Toothbrush + toothpaste
- Face wash + moisturizer
- Lip balm
- Deodorant
- Hair ties + brush
Hospitals are dry, so hydration (face + lips) is key.
12. Makeup (Just the Basics)
Nothing heavy—just enough to feel refreshed for photos and visitors:
- Concealer
- Mascara
- Tinted lip balm
- Cream blush
It’s quick, easy, and helps me feel human again.
Final Thoughts
As a second-time mom, I’ve learned what matters most: comfort, simplicity, and the essentials that actually get used. Packing doesn’t have to be stressful or excessive—just thoughtful.
If you’re preparing your own hospital bag, I hope this helps you choose items that will truly make your stay smoother and more comfortable.
